‘Brothers in Arms' to take part in Ö TILL Ö Race on behalf of St. Josephs.

Pearse and Declan ‘Reggie ‘ Fahy
are two brothers who are going to participate in this strenuous challenge taking place in Sweden on September 6th. They have chosen St. Joseph's as the beneficiary of funds they raise.

Those wishing to make a donation can go to their dedicated Fundraising Page on http://www.mycharity.ie/event/brothersinarms2010/

Ö TILL Ö is a unique race in a unique environment. Teams of two race together from island to island (Ö till Ö). The teams swim between the islands and run on them. The total distance is 64 kilometres of which 10 km are swimming and 54 km are running.

The running sections are beautiful. At times the route goes though woods without trail but most of the time the course is on trail or gravelled roads. To manage to finish the course from dawn to dusk demands that the competitors are fit and that they have practiced a good technique to be quick in and out of the water as there are as many as 38 in and outs.

Teams represent countries from around the world including Sweden, Finland, Norway, UK, USA, Australia, South Africa, Germany, France and Ireland. The Fahy brothers are proud to be the first and only representatives from Ireland.

Fun Braille Readathon

Friday November the 21st saw our inaugural annual VISPA Fun Braille Readathon. It was run in association with the NCBI and the event was held at the conference centre of our campus (St. Joseph’s Centre for the Visually Impaired).

The Readathon is for having fun while reading Braille and for promoting it. All ages from Junior to Adult readers had a chance to participate. We also catered for readers of Grade 1 and Grade 2 Braille. We had compiled a booklist from which you could make your selection. On the day each participant was asked to read a selected passage from their selected text. We also had a celebrity guest appearance!

ICEVI Conference 2009

Trinity College, Dublin

It is such a pleasure to have the 2009 ICEVI European conference hosted in Dublin. Right from the beginning the Irish have shown such enthusiasm and professionalism in their approach to hosting the conference that I can hardly wait to experience the mix of solid scientific content and the social interaction that our hosts are famous for. I hope that this initial brochure will inspire you and encourage you to make advance plans to join ICEVI Europe in Dublin from 5th - 10th July, 2009....
